The Pianist is a 2002 war drama produced and directed by Roman Polanski, starring Adrien Brody. The story is set in the period of World War II, when Hitler has invaded Poland. The story revolves around an acclaimed polish-jewish musician Wladyslaw who gets seperated from his family as the Nazis start implementing their 'Final Solution to the Jewish Problem' in Poland. The Pianist is the story of struggle and survival of Wladyslaw in the ruins of Warsaw during the time when the Nazi War Machine was on its peak.
The Pianist even though a drama, is a movie showcasing the the times of war in almost documentary style. Polanski effortlessly showcases the war in the most disturbing yet brilliant way. The movie showcases the suffering of the Polish people and especially the Jews during World War II. The cinematography, the attention to detail and oh the music! Everything is brilliant. The movie is an absolute cinematic delight, so engrossing it will nearly make you feel the pain and the suffering. This is also Andrew Brody`s best work! His acting has a nearly haunting effect on you. Andrew Brody makes this one of the most unwatchably harrowing yet personally felt movie. It is by far one of the best films made on the Holocaust.
What comes as a bigger surprise is the fact, that the movie, even though a drama is an adaptation based on the autobiography of the acclaimed Polish composer, Wladyslaw Szpilman, who detailed his survival during World War II. Describing the horror`s of the holocaust, with reference to a real story is a strenous task! But showcasing it in such an excellent manner, in such an engraving manner that once you have watched this film, you would never be able to forget it is not just difficult but nearly impossible. No movie has ever been able to showcase poignant human emotions in this manner and that is the magic of The Pianist.
